Have HP laptop; Linksys router and have been online for 3 years now. One day I couldn't get online on laptop and after all usual checkpoints failed, I proceeded to change things and have everything all messed up. (You know when you right-click on the wireless icon and start messing in those boxes). If I start the wireless connectivity from scratch using the wizard, do I have to delete anything or is this done automatically?

Delete the problem connection and proceed with the wizard.

Then, if you still have no connection, see if you can detect your router's signal.
