which available card right now is the most worth it to buy and will last the longest?how long? i've ruled the 5970 out right now b/c it's to expensive. thanks

HD5970 will last you 3+ years with everything on high settings @ 1920.
HD5870 will be the same, basically.
HD5850 will go for 2-3 years.
HD5770 isn't that great. See: HD4870.

What size screen resolution do you play at? What is your CPU so we know it wont get bottlenecked?

1920 and an i7-920 Would it be smart to buy one 5870 now and then get another one at a later time?

5850 would be a better price/performance ratio but 5870 will do good aswell.

As paperfox said, the 5850 will do great, but the 5870 will give you a bit more room with future games and with tesselation.
