The G100 video board in the Acer Aspire x1700 scores a measly 3.7 on the Windows 7 hardware performance test. The next
lowest score is a 5.9. So, if I can upgrade the video board I should have pretty decent overall performance. Is it possible to upgrade the video board and what are my choices? I have a Samsung 24" wide screen display connected via DVI.
I would appreciate any help.
Thank you.

Your Aspire x1700 appears to be low profile... that is a big problem and will limit your selection. Also your PSU is 220w's so you will need to upgrade.

looks like a HD5570 or 9800GT are the most powerfull low profile solutions on newegg after a quick search.

Do you think it's possible to upgrade the cpu as well?

The CPU is an Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz. I didn't think I needed to upgrade it, I just wondered if it was possible to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo. But, yes
according to Windows 7 performance index:
Processor: Calculations per second 5.9
Memory (RAM): Memory operations per second 5.9
Graphics: Desktop perforance for Windows Aero 3.7
Gaming graphics: 3D business and gaming graphics 5.3
Primary hard disk: Disk data transfer rate 5.9

So, I suppose if I replace the video board as you suggested with Newegg's
(POWERCOLOR AX5570 1GBD3-LH Radeon HD 5570 1GB 128-bit GDDR3 Low Profile Ready) video card - My system should do fine.
Thank you again.

http://support.acer.com/acerpanam/manuals/acer/0000/servicemanuals/SG_ASX1700_VTX270_Book_1031.pdf

According to page 59 your motherboard supports FSB 800/1066/1333 MHZ as well as the specs say:
Intel® Core™2 Quad processor (up to 95 W)
Intel® Core™2 Duo processor
Intel® Pentium® dual-core processor
Intel® Celeron® dual-core processor
Intel® Celeron® processor
(varies by model)
So you do have a variety of Core 2 Duo's to choose from but it is not needed, your current CPU should handle anything your new 5570 can throw at it.

Will those models fit in the back slot? The aspire x1700 is a mini and I have had trouble finding parts that will fit.

I need a video card for the same computer. Did the 5570 work alright?

Does it fit in the little shell of the computer? Because I also have a X1700 but I'm afraid that it wont fit.
I live in the Netherlands and almost nobody has experience with this computer. So that's why I'm asking you.

I'm sorry if my Englisch is not very well.

If anyone is still attempting to upgrade one of these, I just this week purchased an MSI R5450 low profile GPU for less than $30 (rebate price) and popped it into the Aspire X1700. It was a significant performance boost over the onboard graphics.

I was given the machine in a nonfunctional state and diagnosed it as a failed GPU (the original GT100 was fried so bad the computer could not even boot). Removing the GPU got it able to boot and run, but onboard graphics were sluggish under Linux Ubuntu 14.04. Upgrading to an R5450 gave me a very usable web-surfer and LibreOffice machine.
