I use a hardrive software, such as maxblast 5.0 to prep any drive and recognize it when windows won't. Maxblast 5.0 works when at least one of your drives is made by seagate or maxtor. Check your brand website for similar software. You can select boot or slave (secondary) when you prep the drive, then make a copy (clone it) if desired, saving lots of time. If you're sure your backup dvd's are good, then format your drive and try installing the software again. The cd's that come in retail boxed drives act as a boot device.
