Hello,
I have a HP Pavillion a6140.at and I can not get into the O/S which is XP Pro. I took Vista off and changed to XP 3 years ago and has been working fine. When I start it up it has vertical blue lines on the screen and some of the letters are incorrect for example "windows startup" looks like "wynd0ws sutup" and all other text has mixed lettering and only just decipherable. I can't enter safe mode and have no luck with the XP pro CD. I have replaced the battery. Even with a new hard drive installed it will recognise it but I can't get the O/S to load. Keep getting the same unreadable text and blue lines after the first page showing the setup info this is readable.
I can get into the CMOS setup and that is readable.
Will a bios update help and how is this done without having access to the O/S? BIOS chip is soldered. My bios is 5.19 installed 05/30/2007, Award Phoenix.
Any help is appreciated.
Is there a another solution?

Welcome Newcomer! :)

My first reaction is that your MOBO is toast, but a bad CPU can sometimes allow BIOS to load. You can try to flash your BIOS but do NOT use the ASUS site instead use only HP's website; the MOBO "may" seem the same but it is a proprietary version.

Do you have a GPU {graphics card} or are you using the on-board VGA {GPU}.

Thanks heaps for the quick reply, I don't want to believe the MOBO is toast but I think your right. HP does not have an update for the BIOS.
No graphics card using on-board.

Your help is appreciated.

I will try your suggestions but I think I will need a lot of luck. Have ordered recovery cd's in a vain attempt to get back into the system and I will source a GPU in the mean time.

Thanks again for the help.

Just a thought-

^ What recovery CD? What's "supposed to be" on the CD?

It "seems" that you are running XP, and below is a clean copy of XP SP3 directly from Microsoft. Also, "if" upon installing you are requested to install a driver then you can make a Custom XP SP3 installer with nLite.
