Hi:

I recently finished Thief 3, and decided to go back and get Thief 2. (I got
Thief 1 as a gift when it came out, but never got T2:Metal Age when it was
out).

So I grabbed it from eBay, and installed. Went great.

But then I go to play, and both on my laptop (Dell Insp. 5150) and desktop
(Dell Dim. 8100) when I click continue on the first mission it hangs. On
the laptop I get the initial image and the guy walking away, then it
freezes, on the desktop it gets nowhere and has some texture error when I
dump out to Windows. Both systems are nVidia based, P4, WinXP, lots of
memory (enough to play Thief 3 without issue).

I tried getting to 'ttlg.com' but it seems dead.

Any ideas or hints for me?

Thanks,

Mike

You probably have hyperthreading turned on. The Dark Engine was not
correctly programmed for multiprocessor machines (even simulated
multiprocessor machines.) You can check if this is the case by typing "set"
in a command prompt and looking to see if the NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS variable
is 2 or more.

You can use the imagecfg tool to set the processor affinity mask in the
Thief .exe files so they're locked down to a single processor.

Here's a link to the faq on Dark Engine and multiprocs.

Also, be sure to turn on Vsync in your videocard drivers. And I had to use
the "setup -lgntforce" to get the game to install. These fixed any issues
in WinXP for me.

Thanks to all - it ended up that I just needed to remove the ; from in front
of safe_texture_manager in USER.CFG
