HD causes program crash

Hello,
I have an exteral 500 gb hard drive and every time i try connect ot all programs including windows based programs start "not responding". I have checked the drives and updates for the drive defrag and pc cleaner nothing is working. My computer reads the contents and i can view the item in the files but when i go to open them it stops working unless I unplug the hard drive. If I unplug it it all goes back to normal. HELP

Are there files on this HD or is it empty and have you done a virus scan of the drive.

its mainly AVI move files and a little music and photos but whatever program i sue it show not responding. I cant virus scan due to this as well

The external drive is connected by usb? Try removing the drive from the external case and connecting it with a sata cable internaly to see if the external case is causing the problem.
