No drive letter for external hard drive windows vista home premium

Hello,
Vista Home Premium SP2 -- External USB drive (WD 500GB) shows up under computer management and is said to be functioning normally, but there is no drive letter assigned and right clicking on the drive (in computer management) has the option to assign drive letter grayed out. How can I get this drive to be assigned a drive letter? Thank you kindly!
