Is this cpu compatible with the ASUS A8M2N-La motherboard?

My friend gave me his AMD cpu.

Here is the description. AMD HDZ940XCGIBOX Phenom II X4 940 3.00 GHz AM2+ 4 x 512KB Desktop Processor Retail

My motherboard is an ASUS A8M2N-LA. I am pretty good with computers but I do not understand cpu's and motherboards.

the hewlett packard website says the following of my motherboard:

Socket: AM2
AMD Athlon 64 up to 3800+
AMD Sempron

I simply need to know if my motherboard will take this newer processor.

Your motherboard needs to be AM2+ or AM3. So no you can't use it. Very nice friend though, that's a sweet CPU.
