  1. A .tif file is an image, a picture. It is not converted to text. So you need to view it as an image. If your default image app (built into win7) won't open it, download any of a hundred free .tif viewers: http://www.google.com/search?q=tif+viewer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

EDIT: Well, that's cute. It turned part of the URL into a frownie.

Do you need information about applications to scan a document and convert it to text?

Yes, I do. Thank you so much
  3. Did your scanner come with a software disc? Basic scan-to-text software is often given away with the scanner.

Google gives away an oldie but goodie: http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/

Or you could just search for OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. If you want to learn more about it then your head can stand, volunteer as a proofreader for Project Gutenberg. They scan and OCR, then go through rounds of proofing and formatting to do a complete conversion to text.
  4. Thank you so much. This is very helpful.
