Install Raid card in Pcie X8 or X16?

Hi I am installing an Areca 1222 Raid controller card on an

Asus p6t deluxe v2 mother board. Should I use a Pcie 8X or 16X slot?

  1. I would use the PCIe x8 slot and keep the x16 for your GPU's. You will not see a bottleneck by doing so.
  2. There is no x8 mechanical slot on that motherboard.

According to the ASUS website, you have:

    http://usa.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=iRlP8RG9han6saZx&templete=2

    3 x PCIe 2.0 x16 (at x16/x16/x1 or x16/x8/x8 mode)
    1 x PCIe x4
    2 x PCI

So, check the motherboard's User Manual for what
combination of add-on cards will drop the last x16 slot
to x1 PCI-E lane. See Page 2-23 in User Manual version E4398
(December 2008): on that Page there is a table
    "PCI Express operating mode".

To be safe, I'd install the Areca in the middle x16 slot.

    MRFS,

Thank you. You are right on. I put it in the middle slot and it worked great. This seems to be a very good RAID controller card. Thank you for taking the time to answer and straighten out my confusion.

    Best regards,

    Jeffaok.
