An i5-750 or Phenom X4 965 BE with a HD 5850? The 965 is cheaper but I want to know if I should shell out that extra for the i5-750 if the performance is a big difference.

At stock settings they are about equal, if including overclocking then the i5 750 would be better as it is faster clock for clock.

Don't forget that the AM3 platform has a much longer expected lifespan, and will most likely see hexa-cores. In other words, you'll have a better upgrade path going AM3.

For gaming it will be the money you spend on the graphics that really matters.

Either processor would be excellent... so I would say the cheaper one.

Here look at the AnandTech benchmarking of the two--it will give you a sense of the strengths and weaknesses of each.

The i5 frequently outperforms, except for in Batman. This makes me want to revise my suggestion. I think at a lower price point (like $155) the Phenoms are a much better value, but if you are going for the most expensive Phenom... its quite tempting to jump to the next price point and get the i5.
