How do I prevent uneeded programs from loading which are running after bootup? i.e. they have icons in the lower right hand corner.

Besides that It seems that transition from Win98SE has been smooth as silk. Now I wonder why I waited.

You could try a program called Startup Cop; it's pretty popular.

Yeah, that really pisses me off too.

There's several areas in the registry which deal with 'Run Once". You can search for those, and clear them out manually.

I personally use X-teq X-Setup. You can get X-Setup from http://www.download.com, and searching for x-setup. It has a *bunch* of tweak options for win2k/Me/98se/XP.

unwanted startup programs usually live in one of 3 places:

1. Your "startup" folder in your start menu.
2. Win.ini file (in the Load= and Run= sections)
3. In the registry under Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run (from memory, I think this is correct).

Thank you for all the help. I must say that this is one thing that was done right in Win98. Seems silly they didn't make it like that. Oh well, two steps forward , and one step back.

Yes, I went to where you described in 3, and deleted a couple items, and presto. That was cool, but it was making me nervous to try it. So far so good, only time will tell if I did it wrong I guess. By the way, your memory was perfect. Thanks again.
