DVI-D Cable Not working on laptop

I just purchased a HDMI/DVI-D cable for my Dell Inspiron 6000 series laptop. I plugged the HDMI into the television and along with a HD15 adapter was able to plug the DVI-D into the back of my laptop, however, there is no picture. Can someone suggest a solution or something I may be doing incorrectly.

So, you're trying to go from VGA out to HDMI in on the TV? Never going to work, as vga is analog only and hdmi is digital.
