Can I make my HD default for program instalation?

I recently built my first PC. I have Windows 7 OS installed on a 64gb SSD (labeled C: ). I also have a 500GB HD (labeled D: ). Everything is working well, but when I install programs, games, or downloads, they automatically default to the "programs" folder within the SSD.

As a work around, I simply created a "games," "downloads," and "programs" folder on my HDD. When programs attempt to install, I just change the specified location.

Is this all I can do? Is there a way to make the HDD the default drive? Some programs like Microsoft security essentials and skype for example did not provide a prompt that would allow me to change the installation location.

I assume this has been asked before, but my searching did not provide results. Thanks!
