Lan connection problems

Hello
I have a Toshiba Satellite L100 system loaded with Windows XP. While the laptop is able to detect the LAN signal/setting, I am unable to connect to the internet. I have checked that my LAN settings [IP address et al] are fine but it still won't work. What do i do?

Check TCP/IP Properties.

Start, Connect To, Connection, Properties, scroll down to TCP/IP and highlight, click Properties and check that Obtain DNS and IP address automatically are enabled.
