well this may seem pretty obvious to most but I felt like I had to ask just to be sure before I buy my build...

As far as a STRICTLY GAMING pc goes, is there anything that can touch the i5-750 at the $200 price/performance point?

Thanks!

Well, There is the AMD phenom ii x4 955 that cheaper than core i5 750 and performs nearly the same in gaming.

Although anything else. Not really, unless you live near a microcenter.

Then your options expand to either having core i5 750 @ $180 or a core i7 860/930 @ $199.99

I second the phenom II 955. The 965 is usually $20 more. I know I wouldn't pay $20 more for a 200MHz clockspeed increase considering they are both black editions. Just make sure you get the C3 stepping. Not the older C2 stepping. C3 stepping is what got the 965 to 125W TDP.

cool thanks, but WOW! i7 930 for $200 ... thats mighty tempting considering i do live by a microcenter, even though i know its overkill for a gaming rig but at that price ... why not

It might be overkill and it might not be overkill. That depends on your video card, the resolution of your monitor and which games you intend to play.
