How to resolve cyclic redundancy check in external hard disk?

I am unable to initialize my new external hard disk drive WD 500GB, each time i get the message DATA ERROR: CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK.....PLEASE HELP ME...THE DISK APPEARS IN DISK MANAGEMENT BUT NOT IN MY COMPUTER...CANNOT ACCESS IT AT ALL... IS MY NEW EXTERNAL HDD DEAD ALREADY? PLEASE HELP

  1. It won't appear in my computer until it's properly initialized and has a drive letter. As far as I know, CRC errors aren't fixable. You might want to try the drive in a different enclosure or mount it internally. If you can't do those, you might want to try a different USB or Esata port and see if it makes a difference.

    Also, before you try those, download WD's data lifeguard utility and have it check the drive.
