Do I need to get the same kind of memory if i want to upgrade?

If i want to upgrade my memory from a 4gb to 8gb, do I need to get the same 4gb stick or can i get a one from a completely different company?

It is most preferable to get the same stick(s).. If availability is the problem, you can go for other brand/manufacturer as long as the specs, namely operating frequency, CAS timings, voltage etc., line up with your current existing module.. You can perform a clock speed mismatch but in that case, the memories will operate at the speed of the lowest speed memory module(s).. If getting other brand, try to get one with atleast the same voltage timings that of your current RAM.. Other specs can mostly be matched in the BIOS..
