Can different brands of same memory module (pc 800-45) be used in computer desktop running XP?

'Can' yes - 'always' no. My best advice is to first get the same exact model/part-number RAM or at least the same exact Speed, CAS timings & Voltage.

^+1 jaquith is correct. You can, but it's not always a guarantee. Also keep in mind that if you do use different brands (as well as speed) all your memory will go as fast as the slowest ram installed.

In other words if you have a 500Mhz ram installed and you install an 800MHz, the 800Mhz will drop to 500Mhz.
