This will be for a new AMD Phenom X6 1055T build. I haven't overclocked before so I might or might not.

Mushkin is $139 for 8 GB
DDR3 1333, 1.5V, CAS 9

PNY XLR8 is $126 for 8 GB.
DDR3 1600, 1.65V, CAS 8

Other suggestions are welcome.

1600MHz is only for OCing, with 1333MHz you can limit your OC (with the i7s this is around 3.5GHz). So if you want to OC get 1600MHz.

I prefer to get brands such as Mushkin, G.Skill and Corsair. I don't have any experience with PNY and thus would not suggest it.

The latency (first one is 9 second is 8) is for performance. The lower the better, though the amount of performance is not large.

The PNY you linked to was 4GB and the Mushkin was 6GB, whats with that? Are you sure you require 8GB of RAM? 99% of people don't. If your not sure just get 4GB then upgrade if you need to.

Hope that helps.

You don't OCing so choose this Mushkin is $139 for 8 GB
DDR3 1333, 1.5V, CAS 9 - If you don't do video editing or photo editing you don't need an 8Gb RAM.

I was planning on getting two packs of the 4GB PNY or that 6GB Mushkin on sale and then a separate 2GB Mushkin. I would expect that I'll require more than 4GB of RAM because I'll probably want to run Windows 7 with a Linux server in a VM. I imagine it's going to get tight with only 4 GB but let me know what you all think.

Thanks for all the great advice so far!

Yeah you might need 8GB then though I'm not sure, as long as you know what your doing.

You can't find an 8GB mushkin? Just get two of the following mushkins:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
For only $114. I think thats your best option unless theres a better 8GB set.

I didn't double up on the 4GB packs of Mushkin because the rebate will only work once :(  I figured it might be cheaper to grab the 6GB pack while it's on sale and then a random 2GB Silverline later (as opposed to hoping for the 4GB pack to go on sale again). I could just get the 4GB for now though. DDR3 prices have been going down. Buy now or wait? Corsair XMS3 is $60/2x2GB at Fry's as well. http://www.frys.com/product/6009088 although NewEgg had a lot of DOA for that product so I might trust the Mushkin RAM more.

Yeah whatever, its your call.

Maybe you have a good idea with the 6GB + 2GB, I never thought about it.

By "Buy now or wait" do you mean buy none of it now or do you mean buy 4GB now. I think you can only make up the decision as you know more about it.

Just do what you think is right, its not like you can go very wrong.

There ended up being a sale on 2x4GB of the Mushkin Silverline RAM for $132. I'm 80% of the way through memtest without any problems so I think I made the right choice :)

Good work, you'll now have more space in case you need even more RAM.

80% is basically done, no errors for you. Good luck with the rest of your build, you'll have fun.
