Sata hard drive not detected

I bough this second hand Dell desktop with a SAT hardrive in it. The desktop is believed to have been working previously but had passwords so I had to formart it before I can start using it. At my first attempt the formarting started quite well but failed to finnish. I tried it again just to receive a boot failure message which said "the hard drive 0 is not present". I tried it several times just to receive the same message. I'm stack and giving up now. Is there anyone outther who can help.

  1. I may not be the best person to answer this, however I have been hard drive trouble recently and so have been looking into the area. Hiren's boot cd has been very useful: it's freeware you can download to create a bootable cd (maybe usb too) with loads of tools, including many for hard drive diagnosis/repair. Might be a good place to start.
