Recently acquired a used Gateway Solo 2500 laptop (266 MHz Pentium II).
Works fine, but the CD-ROM icon in the little LCD status window blinks
about once every 1 to 2 seconds when there isn't even a CD installed.
Why is it doing this? Can it be stopped? The CD-ROM and rest of the
machine actually work fine, but this blinking icon is very distracting.

Try removing and reseating the CD drive. In Device Manager, select the
drive properties and uncheck Autoplay. See if that provents the drive
icon from blinking. Is the drive door fully latched when closed?

Q, you're right. Disabling autoplay stops the CD-ROM icon from
blinking. It's sort of a shame that I can't have autoplay enabled
without seeing that darned icon blink. Oh well.

FYI, in Windows 98SE which the laptop in question runs, the Device
Manager is a bit more cryptic than simply calling it "Autoplay". Instead
the checkbox is called "Auto Insert Notification". Anyway, unchecking
this box had the desired effect.

Thank you very much, Q.
