How to fix a disk drive that wont read discs

Hi! My Sony Vaio laptop has stopped reading discs. They are not being detected by my computer at all. Does anyone know how to fix this? Or what is was caused by? It has not been damaged in any way, it just stopped. I would be so grateful for any help! Thank you!

Can you read the disks? Is it just autoplay not working? If it's just the autoplay not working, sorry, I have no more suggestions. If it can't read the disk at all, then you probably have a defective drive.

I cannot read the discs at all. I think it might be a defective drive. Do you know how to fix this? Or is it unable to be fixed? Thank you so much for all of your help!

Bad drive = replace drive

It probably is dead but it could still be worth trying a laser cleaning disk.

If you can't fix it, a USB external will cost a lot less than a Vaio replacement part.

Alright, I know it's probably too late for you, but It may help someone coming here like I did.

Steps

1. Open Start Menu

2. Search "Run"

3. Click "Run"

4.Type "CMD"

5.Once it opens in CMD type "E;" and press Enter

6. You should get a message asking what you would like to do with the drive.

This is what worked for mine, I guessed it just wasnt detecting the drive opening and closing so this pretty much forces it to pull from drive E

If none of these happens I would recomend you buy a new one instead of trying to fix and waste cash on the old one.
