Budget HTPC

Greetings and salutations

My brother asked me yesterday about HTPC's. We'd like to look at building one in the next couple of weeks. I have never used, built, or spec'd out an HTPC so I really don't know what goes into them. Thus, I turn to the all knowing Tom's community for guidance!!

Budget: $500-$700

Items needed: Tower and all inside including OS

Items not needed: Peripherals - keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, etc.

Preferred vendors: Newegg & Tiger

Overclocking: No

Crossfire: No

Thoughts: Need HDMI out to TV. Local cable provider uses coaxial cable to house connected to a digital converter box - doubt if the box can be eliminated, not sure how that works.

Other than this, I don't know exactly what to look for for components in a HTPC.

  2. 1.) I'll need a TV tuner card for broadcast digital cable and a blu-ray player. Maybe it can't be done on this budget.

2.) Does a build like this NOT need a high power PSU? Coming from the gaming world, seeing a 300w PSU recommended is a shock!!

3.) Are there cases that are more Home Theater-ish? I'm envisioning a horizontal case that would stack with the stereo components.

    THANKS!!

About $650 without a TV tuner card. That might take some research to find one with good reviews on Newegg. Anybody have a recommendation?

pc power consumption is going down not up that setup with the graphics card would hardly touch 200 watts maximum draw
