Hello everyone,

This is my first post in this section of the forum and i would like to say that i love TH and the forum, you helped me so much to enrich my knowledge in pc hardware and to stay up to date in current tech. after researching a bit about system builds here and asking some questions in the CPU section, i have found a lot of useful information, professional advice and fast and helpful replies.
ok, so this is my first build and i would really like to get your help.
here are the specs:

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: this month (the sooner the better)

BUDGET RANGE: i would say up to $2000 (the cheaper the better) Before Rebates (im not going to use rebates...). budget is not really an issue here but i don't want to pay extra for something i don't need or that doesn't increase performance noticeably.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming and 3D Modeling/Texturing and Rendering have the same weight in regards to system usage (both first priority), Programming, Photoshop, and all the other usual stuff (internet surfing, movie watching, office etc.).
Im a beginner hobbyist (for now) in 3D modeling (using 3dsmax for now) and also a new university student (in CS) so i don't think i will be heavily rendering for the next couple of years (im also not going to do any animation anytime soon).
For gaming, i would like to play the latest games at med-high settings at high resolutions (on monitor sizes of 24''-30'').
Im also a beginner at programming but im intending to write and compile large amounts of code if time allows (Im trying to write games).

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: keyboard, mouse, monitor, speakers, OS

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com (or anything else, doesn't really matter. Im probably going to buy the parts in Israel where it is much more expensive or order them from the US which costs almost the same due to shipping and custom fees, but consider me as buying in the US for simplicity)

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Israel

PARTS PREFERENCES: for the CPU i can't decide between Intel's core i7-860 and i7-920 even after reading tons of reviews about every aspect of them.
for the GPU i think ATI's HD 5850 would be fine.

OVERCLOCKING: Yes, never done this before, but i will try to overclock the machine in order to gain as much performance out of it (as long as it doesn't shorten the system life considerably and the gain is tangible).

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Yes, at first i will probably be fine with one GPU, but i would like to be able drop in a second one (or maybe more if it gives a significant benefit) and maybe switch to more intensive GPU/s in the future.

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 (or higher)

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: I would like a quiet PC

so as i stated earlier i have a really hard time deciding between these CPUs: Core i7-920 and i7-860. After reading a lot of reviews and threads about the two and their respective chipsets i have come to a dead end. On the one hand the 860 has an improved TurboBoost which effects system responsiveness and gives it the edge in stock clocks and it also has the lower platform cost. The big plus of TurboBoost is that it optimizes the cores depending on the application/s in use, something im not sure can be reproduced with the 920 by simply overclocking it? it also has a lower TDP, but what are the real world advantages of this except for lower power consumption at stock? will it allow me to overclock better or buy a cheaper HSF?
On the other hand the 920 is definitely the more future proof system with it's higher bandwidth memory, more pci-e lanes to support future more demanding GPUs, 3 channel memory controller which might be utilized better in the future and the ability to host the upcoming Hexacore Gulftowns. it also overclocks easier from what i have read which might be better for a beginning overclocker like me. it is also the faster CPU clock for clock (when TB is disabled) if it even means anything.

these two reviews are the ones that make me bounce back and forth between the two CPUs, both have contradicting personal conclusions:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/c [...] -review/11
which is for the i7-920

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipse [...] =3634&p=20
which is for the i7-860 (the all Lynnfield family actually)
can you actually feel the responsiveness of the whole system due to TurboBoost like they stated so excitedly in this review?
does TurboBoost actually matters when you plan on overclocking? doesn't overclocking give you the same effect (just less energy efficient and always running fast)?

some other specific things i would like to know about the CPUs are:
does 3 channel memory give you any advantage in 3d apps (or anything else?)
is there a difference in performance between 1156 system with 4GB Ram and a 1366 system with 6GB Ram (there was one review that showed these systems' performance mostly on par).
How does overclocking affects power consumption between the two, does the relative difference stays the same? or does it become negligible?
Is it actually beneficial to overclock when dealing with 3D apps?
when manually overclocking, does it affect all cores equally, i mean if someone says he overclocked his i7-920 to 4GHz does it mean that each core runs at 4GHz? does it reduce the life span of the cpu considerably or involves any other penalty to the system?
can you overclock with TurboBoost enabled (on the 860) and still get good results?
does TurboBoost (in 860) prolongs the life of the cpu (due to efficiency)?

sorry for all the questions, exaggerated amount of information and for raising again the over beaten subject of the difference between i7-920 and i7-860, it's just that it is a build that is going to serve me for at least 5 years and i want it to function decently through all that time.

Any help, advice or suggestion would be greatly appreiciated!
Thanks for bearing with me :)
