Why would you get core 2s' now, they are outdated.

Depending on your budget these are great options:
•CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition Heka 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Processor Model HDZ720WFK3DGI - OEM
•MOBO: ASUS M4A785TD-V EVO AM3 AMD 785G HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
or
•CPU: Intel Core i3-530 Clarkdale 2.93GHz LGA 1156 73W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Model BX80616I3530 - Retail
•MOBO: ASUS P7P55D-E LGA 1156 Intel P55 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail

if you have more money think about maybe these:
•CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor Model HDZ955FBGMBOX - Retail
•MOBO: ASUS M4A79T Deluxe AM3 DDR3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail
or
•CPU: Intel Core i5 750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80605I5750 - Retail
•MOBO: GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD4 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail.
Obvoiusly this depends on your other parts ram, case, psu and what it will be used for i.e. gaming, internet surfing etc. :)

I agree with joshc123 that there are much better CPUs for the same price as a new E8400 (unless you've already got the E8400 or you're getting it for free).

I got the core 2 duo e8400 2 years ago and still works fine... My old Mobo when down so need advice for new one

Full ATX or micro ATX depends on how much stuff you want to pack into your PC and the connections you'll need.

Since you already have the E8400, get an Asus P45 chipset mobo to run it at 3.6 Ghz or higher. A G31 or G41 chipset can't overclock the E8400 that high, if at all.

We need a bit more information. What are the rest of the components? What budget are you looking at? Do you want Crossfire capability? Without knowing that info, I would check these boards out. Just pick whichever one has the features you need/want.

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3L LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $89.99 - $10 MIR

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail $129.99 - $20 MIR

The later board was the gold standard back in the day when Core 2 Duo was king.

the rest of my components:
intel core 2 duo e8400
ati radeon 4870 x2 hd
3x ddr2 2gig 1066
WD 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s
LG DVD-ROM DVD±R DL

budjet: 100$

crossfire capability: yes

thx....

I stand by my recommendation of the GA-EP45-UD3P for your use even though it's slightly over budget. The extra $30 buys you an excellent board. The MIR brings it to only $10 over budget.

P45 like mentioned.
Or if you're a good ebayer, look for a clean DFI DK X48 T2RSB Plus
