I'm contemplating buying a used C5050 or C8080... and I've noticed
sometimes people are selling them before the original warranties have
run out in order to upgrade to something else.
What I'm also wondering, is whether if there is time left on the
original warranty, it can be transferred to the new owner?
Does anyone know if Olympus allows this? And what it involves?

Ask Olympus.
BTW - I have never heard that this should be a problem.

Given it's the weekend and the auction I was thinking about bidding on
ends tomorrow, I figured I wouldn't get an answer out of Olympus in
time. However, right now, looks like the auction will go beyond my
means anyway.

Someone posted the link... and the answer is no. The warranty is
limited to the original buyer I guess.

Many countries force the manufacturer to honour warranties regarless
of whether the purchaser has sent in 'warranty registration cards'
or not. The proof of purchase is enough, and the warranty is
administered by the retailer. If the original purchaser gives you
the original receipt, how would the manufacturer know whether or
not you were the original purchaser? For cars the warranty passes
over, and in many places the same warranty laws apply.

For an authoritative answer to your question, read the warranty and/or
call Olympus customer service to ask.

I suppose it depends on if the original retailer enters your address
into their system and then prints it out on the receipt. Some places
do. And if the item was purchased online... almost certainly the
receipt would list the name of the purchaser.

deja vu'...haven't we just been through this? Sell it to a friend and there
is no problem. Sell it to a stranger and the warranty is the least of their
worries.
