EPS 8Pin Connector

My friends power supply has an ATX 4Pin connector, and an EPS 8Pin Connector.
His motherboard allows for the 4pin, and an 8pin cable on the motherboard. Is that what the 8Pin EPS cable is for? Or is that for something else?
