Hello,

Both 512mb with ddr3. About the same price in our local shops. w/c one is better for a 22" monitor. not necessarily full resolution. maybe 1280x1024 only.

or should i compare the same same 9600gt with gt240 ddr5? or 1gb gt240 with ddr3? both gt220 upgrades a little bit more expensive but still within budget.

That's for the DDR5 GT 240. The DDR3 version would be weaker.
I would recommend buying online. You will likely be able to get a much better card for the same money. For $100 you can get an HD4850 which would be much better than either.
I would also recommend getting a card appropriate for your native resolution unless you are using a CRT.

Well according to several benchmarks i have looked at. The 9600GT outperforms the GT240 in Directx9 by about 5-10fps. the GT240 outperforms the 9600GT in Directx10 by 5-10fps. So its all up to you. And the 9600GT(Majority) needs a 6-PIN power connecter the GT240 doesnt. Also if you have a 22" monitor and want to play at resolutions 1680x1050 in the future you'll need 1GB of video memory over the 512MB. this should help u choose the better card for you :D

Actually most 9600GTs don't need the power connector these days. Also neither of these cards will do well at 1680x1050 and even if they could the difference between 512mb vs 1gb of memory would be very marginal.

It depends on what games you play.

Call of Duty modern Warfare 2 1680x1050- 70fps average

with a 8800GS= 9600GT equivalent

Gears of War 1680x1050- 62fps locked

8800gs

So no you dont need a really good card do get acceptable frame rates...but a HD4850 and over would be preferable

Well yes, depends on the game and the settings.
