I would like to buy the Canon EOS 20D. It seems the best prices are from
mail order houses, even though there is as much as a $500 difference for the
same camera body between some places. Would some of you please comment on
your experience when ordering from some of these places. Is the saving's
worth it? Do these places live up to their word? Is the qualityof the
product any different? What is the downside of buying via this method?

Also, please indicated if you have had good experience from a mail order
house not listed below.

Below are some of the links and names of the more common mail order houses.

Most of teh places you list are scam shops - and those that are not are
still dodgy.
I've been dealing with Adorama for the past 15 plus years -- perhaps more
like 18 years, time flies - and never had a problem. If a store is
advertising more than a few dollars below Adorama's price there is probably
something fishy going on.

Don't scare people like that. There are places selling the camera with 18-55
kit priced the same as or better than body only in B&H or Adorama and they
are reliable. But $500 is way out of line so watch out.

I recently ordered my DRebel from OneCall.com. I have found them to quite reliable.
Other than the low price they list, they will match any advertised price. Since I had
heard good things about them in the past, I was determined to order from them. After
checking prices at various on-line sites such as Adorama, B&H, etc., I called them on
their toll free number. They matched the lowest prices on each item ordered and added
their own discount. The items were shipped the same day. I highly recommend them.

BTW: If you recommend a buyer, they will pay a 1% bonus to the one who did the
recommending. (If you care to ... My name is Mort Newman :)

Good luck!

You haven't named either of the two *best* online shops: B&H and
Adorama.

You can buy from other shops cheaper, but not better.
The shops you list above are, for the most part, rippoff shops; the
low price is a bait & swicth opener. You probably won't find the D20
actually in stock when you try to buy, but they will have a "kit"
available which, by some strange coincidence, contains all the
accerssories Canon includes in the factory box. Plus maybe a filter
kit thay will sell to you for the remarkably low price of $49, which
other shops sell for $15. Plus a battery for $49 that you can buy
elsewhere for $12. Plus a bag to hold all this for the low price of
$39, which you could buy at a yard sale for $.50. Of course, you must
buy the entire package, and the package is priced far above the street
price of the D20. If you'd rather wait for the camera they offer for
that low price, you'll need to wait for it to come into stock; don't
call them, they'll call you.

Don't forget to check Amazon.com. They are usually cheaper than B&H or
Adorama, plus they offer free shipping. Also, you can open an Amazon
Visa account and get $30 more off the price, plus an additonal 3% rebate
in Amazon gift certificates. On a 20D, that's another $45 or so off.

Also check pictureline.com

Tha Amazon price seems to fluctuate a lot, +/- $50 or so.

Also, buying body only doesn't save you much in many places, except the
standard shops, like B&H and Adorama which have no pressure to lower the
price. The extreme case I found is a mere $10. I'm planning on buying the
kits and sell the 18-55 on ebay. What's the ongoing price for that lens now?

I don't know all of the names, but Abe's of Maine (based in Brooklyn, not
Maine) and Broadway Photo are two names that consistantly pop up when people
talk about shady camera dealers. There are various things that they do,
including high pressure sales to buy their overpriced accessories, not shipping
everything that the manufacturer puts in the box, and then reselling these
items piecemeal (ie, do you want a battery with that?).

Beware of a price that's way way below anyone elses. There's a bunch of
scam artists out there. I got beaten by a 3rd party seller advertising on
Amazon.com for over $700. Luckily they have a buyer protection program, and
I got a full refund from the deadbeat seller. Before you buy check out the
seller here:

I second that. I bought what I thought was a new item and got shipped a piece
of garbage. Amazon credited my card but the hassle was upsetting.

buydig.com, which is the same as Beach, seemed to be good. I bought an
S500 from them with no problem, and no attempt to sell over-priced
accessories. I was very hesitant, after having had a bad experience with
Beach about 12 years ago, but the ratings were good, so I took a chance.

I doubt if it's worth doing this. Everyone seems to buy the camera with
the lens, and the lens isn't usable on many cameras (though there are
ways to modify it to make it usable on some other EOS bodies, see:
"http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/efs-10d.html" ). Bob
Atkins EOS site is amazingly useful.

Following up on my own post, buydig.com is $1500 for the 20D+lens,
Amazon is $1550, both with free shipping. For me, Amazon is still a
better deal, because I get an extra 5% discount, plus the 3% Visa card
rebate, so it's $120 under the $1550 posted price. I haven't bought yet,
but will do so when Amazon is at $1500, and the 20D has a little more
history.

B&H is quite expensive for the 20D+lens.

The most respected ones are www.bhphotovideo.com, www.adorama.com, and
www.samys.com. They have the lowest prices that actually refer to honest,
available merchandise. Others may have similar prices, especially now that
computer stores are selling cameras.

Prices much lower than theirs generally indicate something fishy is going
on, such as inflated shipping costs, compulsory purchase of accessory kits,
or simple unavailability.

and BH sells the Fuji E550 for $399 + shipping before a $50 rebate.

Wal-Mart sells the same camera for $349.00 + tax before a $50 rebate.

Is BH photo that much better that someone would mail order a camera that
they can buy from locally and can take back with no questions asked?

For many consumer items, the answer is no. Get it at the lowest priced, but
reliable, vendor you can find. B&H does have many profesional photography,
audio, video equipment and accessories that you would hardly find at your
local electronic stores. This is the main reason I shop there. I am looking
for a Canon 20D. It's so popular that I can find a much better deal
elsewhere than B&H. Granted, in lower priced outfits, their stocks of 20D go
faster and need to wait a week or so for new shipments. If one needs the
camera now for important assignments, B&H is handy and reliable. It comes
out to whether 5-10% saving is worthy. I would rather save $100, than having
20D right now as I have no urgent need at this moment.

If you can find the camera you want in Walmart cheaper, go for it (unless you
have problems buying from Walmart in the first place). However, usually
Walmart seems to have a small selection of last years cameras for sale. I
strongly suspect when I plunk down my money for a Minolta D7D or Olympus E1
(the two DSLRs I am looking at right now), I won't be able to find them at
Walmart.

IMO, yes.
I know for a fact from experience that WalMart repackages returns and
sells them as new. I just had this experience with a Sanyo set-top DVD
recorder. Why should I need to take something back in this situation
at all? Not only is this practice illegal, but it does not enhance
WalMArt's reputation at all.

Henry,

I found B&H mail order policy ambiguous. If, for example, a digital
photography product arrives DOA or with a defect, can it be returned
within 7 days of shipment arrival with B&H picking up the return
shipment cost as well as expediting the replacement -- or should one
take literally that from day 1 such a case would be considered a
manufacturer's warranty claim? What about day 8, day 29,30,31?

I am sorry you did. Fortuinately most do not, although if I get too many
similar reports I'll rewrite them.

We start counting from the day you receive the merchandise. If the item arrives
DOA it shouldn't take more than seven days for you to determine this.

OneCall says they will match the price if it is listed by an authorized
dealer only. Who's an Authorized dealer? Can all those places be authorized?

Competitive Price Match. Prices can change frequently. If you have a
verifiable lower price on in-stock merchandise, from an authorized dealer,
we will do our best to meet or beat that price.

Not to cast aspersions onto your policy, but sometimes I'll "receive"
something from somewhere while I'm on the road, and I won't even see it
until my return, which could be anywhere between a week or month later.
Fortunately, products (non-photo) I've purchased for package delivery
from most vendors have been high-quality, packaged appropriately, and
arrived secure and problem free.

My whole point is, there could be the odd exception of having received a
package, but not having actually seen the package let alone what's
inside. Admittedly, in my case at least, my "away" obligations are more
my problem than anyone's, but I thought my mentioning it here may offer
food for thought.
