Get an i7 now or wait for the "latest and greatest"?

Hey everybody.

I'm almost pulling the trigger on a new system based on the X58 chipset. I'll use this PC solely for gaming and nothing more. So having said, should I go ahead and pull the trigger on an i7 930, or is there anything better on the horizon that I'm not aware of?

Also, recomend me a decent motherboard some triple-channel DDR3 sticks. I'll be using 2x Radeon HD 5870 xfired. I don't not need any expensive extra-features, I never use them. I just need two PCI-E slots.

If you don't even need SATA III or USB 3.0 I'd recommend the Asus P6TD Deluxe for the motherboard.

RAM-wise don't rule out Patriot Viper 6GB CAS8 1600MHz (I love the Sector 5 Viper II but can't seem to find it any more, plus it never came in dual-channel kits so I got 3 kits for the 12GB I needed in a client build - still ran triple-channel at 1600MHz no worries).

I have on use for sata 3 or USB3.0 right now. My trusty Intel SSD and Samsung Spinpoints don't need them.

Get the i7 920 or 930. Don't spend extra $ for anything like a 970 or 980. Even THG can OC the 920 to better than the 970!

The 920 has been OC'd to 3.2GHz, and stayed stable...

And IMHO, USB3 and SATA 3 (6.0 Gbps) are highly overrated:

1). Not even a SSD an saturate the bandwidth on SATA II. No hard drive even comes close! Yes, they maybe rated ar 3.0Gbps, but thats not what they can put out. My best "copy" has been 150Mbps from a RAID 0 setup to a (clean) back up drive, all in SATA 2. There are more threads on this topic...

2). Anyone have ANY USB 3.0 devices? Even plugging my iPod into USB3 won't "sync" my iPod any faster, as it is not USB 3.0. Yeah, it'll work, as it's all backwards compatible, just not a USB 3.0 speeds.

BUT is does make you "future friendly" from when these things evolve further.

As for your build, I see you are going to be a minimalist, might I suggest the Asus Rampage II Gene motherboard? Smaller form factor, built as a gamers board (ROG). But it is pricey! (try eBay) Then again, this board might have "expensive extras" you wouldn't need. Nevermind. I'm responding to posts on your thread, not your OP.

I think he may be referring to waiting until the new intel sandy bridge chips come out later in the year.

The Dominators are on the average going for 80 bucks or so higher than most other tri-channel kits, are they really worth it?

Hi, my budget is flexible, but I don't want to spend on stuff that won't give me better gaming performance (higher FPS). Nor I need "future proof" since I replace my PC every 2 years or so. Every time I bought something super high-end it became outdated in no time. Last year I bought Intel Core 2 Extreme and the the best mobo and now it is useless for upgrade due to 775 socket. :fou:

1k on a CPU only to become outdated by the end of the year? No, thanks. I'd rather buy the 930 and oc the hell out of it to have similar or even better performance for 1/5 of the money. I'll never buy top of the line again...

DDR3 will life a long time, so, u should not worried about that.
