Printing blank pages

hp4580 officejet all-in-one, installing on dell running xp sp2, during installation of the drivers the hardware test doesn't seem to negociate a interface speed. The problem is the printer test and any printing attempts spews blank pages?

Normally an ink cartridge or incorrect (misaligned) paper causes this.
