I want to upgrade my CPU from a Pentium 4 ht 3.2Ghz to a core 2 duo e6300 1.86GHz.

i have an Asus P5P800 Motherboard which at stock had the Pentium 4 ht 3.2Ghz
my question is does this board support duel core processors because once i had installed the core 2 duo e6300 1.86GHz my PC wouldn't start up at all.
Do i need to set something in the BIOS to different settings for this to work or should i invest in a new board. if so any suggestion which are at a reasonable price £50-£80 max

I don't think the 865G chipset based motherboards support Core 2 processors, only Pentium Ds.

If you already have the C2D E6300, then you have to buy a new motherboard that support it:
Here are possible choices. Just look at CPU supported and you can pick those that support Core 2 Duo according to your budget.

cheers for answering MY post

I understand where your coming from I wouldn't go out and buy a chip without knowing it fit my MB first.

the e6300 chip was in a sff PC that i wasn't using and was hoping i wouldn't have to shell out on a new board lol but hey never mind

thanks for info
