Powered vs non-powered optical drive for netbook troubleshooting?

Hi:
I want to get an optical drive for netbook troubleshooting such as OS installing. My doubt is whether to get one with an external AC/DC adapter or not; or make one myself. Do all netbooks have enough power to feed an external optical drive?. In principle I intend to get a DVD reader, for I don't need the recording feature for this use.

  1. Don't know of any optical drive that runs just from one USB connection. I have seen some cases that work that have two USB connectors, one for data/power, second for power. You don't need one with a power brick though, just one with dual USB connections for power.
