How to fix p6x58d-e memory problem

A few things can cause this: RAM in incorrect slots, mix-matched RAM, drive Partitions, bad stick, or setting Max Memory.

Also if I put the ram in slots 1 and 3 the machine will not start up

Most importantly, I ass-u-me you're running a 64-bit OS otherwise 4GB is the MAX.

Also, post your Resource Monitor screen {all 3 sticks installed}

Also, you can run Memtest {with ALL 3 sticks} 2 passes; burn a CD/DVD {from ISO/zip file} - http://www.memtest.org/
