Updating Firmware (General)

just wanted to know the proper procedure to update a SSDs firmware if need be when u already have a existing boot drive but are making ur new SSD the new boot drive.
looks like enabling AHCI mode, installing the SSD, then running the firmware update, then reboot, unhook all drives, install windows????

However, some manufactures want you to do the f/w upgrade in IDE mode.

What drive?
