Can I place a Socket AM3 CPU into a Socket AM2+ Motherboard?

I currently have an ASUS M3A78-EM AM2+/AM2 AMD Micro ATX Motherboard. It doesn't have an AM3 socket.

I planned on buying a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz 4x512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor. I read somewhere that I can place this processor into a socket AM2+. I am just wanting reassurance before I fork out the money to buy this.

  2. You sure can. Just look here for compatability: http://www.asus.com/Product.aspx?P_ID=amYCbidk7vhOQLWp.

if it is compatible, remember to update the BIOS before installing the new CPU

x2 on this. There should be a link next to that processor on the ASUS website. Just follow the link to download the bios version (If you don't already have it or aren't already above the bios required). Then you can go into the bios and use the EZ Flash tool under "TOOLS".
