if you have a nvidia chipset on the mobo can you hook in ati cards ? and vice versa
Also can HD 5000 sereies cards work on am3 mobo with nvidia chipset ?

You can however crossfire is not supported on nvidia chipsets as well as SLI on ATI chipsets. But that dose not prevent you from using two independent ATI cards on a Nvidia chipset (just to gain extra monitor outputs).
