Why is my computer suddendly so slow after defraging my hard drive

why is my computer suddendly so slow after defraging my hard drive. It keeps making the ticking noise of the hard drive accessing something but I show no operation in progress. Every command now has a delay, or even locks up the computer before it will execute. It doesn't matter whether I'm on the internet or not.

Backup all you can, while you can.
Ticking or clicking noise indicates drive is failing, and all the HDD activity on a defrag just made it worse !
