Testing Components with PSU?

Can I use a good (new) PSU to test fans, fan controller, lights, other small parts without the PSU being connected to motherboard? PSU is a ATX 500watt and I do not want to damage it. Thanks, this forum has been so helpful.

Thanks idejason, you got best answer and the link you posted was just what I was looking for. I figured that the PSU may need some way complete the circuit but w/o a motherboard I was not sure how to do it. Your help is much appreciated, Take Care!
