Hey I'm new to digital photography and still own a perfectly good Nikon F50
with a Tamron 28-200 lens.

My question is this - Has anyone ever produced an insert which fits into an
SLR and converts it to a digital?

Is this possible?

Or are these stupid questions?

Thanks for your (serious) answers.

There's been a lot of hot air about developing such a beast, but there's
never even been a working prototype: http://www.siliconfilm.com/.

There was a company called "Silicon Film" a few years ago that said it was
doing this. It never amounted to anything though, and I think they're gone
now.

Leica have a digital back for their R SLR system, due for release next year.

And there are digital backs available for medium format SLR systems.

However, if you want to use Nikon mount lenses, youor only real option is to
buy a digital SLR that will mount them. Nikon compatible DSLRs are produced
by Nikon themselves, Kodak and Fujifilm.

Never a stupid question when it concerns technology! I think that as soon
as they develop this, we'll all be switching over to the latest
holo-projector camera, and digital will be dead!

Fartware is like vapourware, but with a smell

Yes. Kodak did this from 1991, with the DCS 100 - which was a Nikon
F3 with a 1.3 Mpx digital back. Later models in the DCS-series
include the DCS 460 (1996), based on the Nikon N90s. I still
use the latter: http://heim.ifi.uio.no/~gisle/photo/dcs460.html .

> Is this possible?

It is certainly possible, as evident from those old Kodaks.

Both the F3 and N90s had interchangeable backs, so to fit a digital
back onto one isn't that hard (if you have the back - that is).
There is plenty of those backs being sold on eBay these days.

But I've never heard of a digital back for the F50/N50. I don't
think that making one (or adapting one from the DCS 460) is a
viable DIY project.

(Btw: There is also an outfit - known as "Silicon Film" - that
insists it has a "product" that will turn any SLR into a digital
camera. AFAIK - their product is vapourware - but they're still
on the web: http://www.siliconfilm.com/.)

Leica almost has one :)

It was supposed to be released this month, but has been pushed back to
April 2005. I guess making digital backs for 35mm camreas is no easy task.

Thanks for the link! Their page starts out:

Voyager One, Inc., a Nevada Corporation through it’s wholly owned
subsidiary Silicon Film Inc., an Illinois Corporation has developed a
solution for the approximately 80 million 35mm SLR camera owners who are
looking for a viable digital solution method without having to discard
their present equipment.

I don't think the OP was asking about a digital back, but rather an
insert that takes the place of a 35mm film cannister that could simply
be inserted instead of film, such as the old Silicon Film concept, as
you mention below.
This would let anyone with an SLR go digital, not just certain Nikon
users.

Two red flags if the gratuitous apostrophe is a MS IE-only apostrophe
that is displayed as a question mark in standards compliant browsers.

While it would be possible - does anyone recall the older Polaroid backs for
Nikons with the mirrors and all? I can't recall the name right now, but recall
the monstrosity. This was before the backs that took 645 Polaroid and just
replaced the film closure door. Anyway, one would have to have a damned fine
SLR with system lenses to opt for this route. Think of the cost v a DSLR that
will take the same lense, regardless of magnification ratio. I've got a ton of
F2's & F4's, and just bought a D70 for digital SLR-type work. Maybe a D2X is
in the future, but I need something digital now.

There is one, a prototype, can't remember the name but estimated cost was
just under $1,000.00. The biggest problem was the resolution issue EG going
up every six months or so. It was however a full 24mmX36mm sensor.

So far this is the only information on such a device.
