Asus X58 BIOS does not list 6Gb/s SATA drive

MB/Drive:
Asus X58
WD Caviar Black 6.0Gb/s

Just powered up my new build, and when I hit [del] to get into the BIOS, I see an initial message about the Marvell Controller and about my 1TB SATA drive (http://i.imgur.com/Zt2MZ.jpg). Then it gets to the BIOS screen, on which I see all other components except the SATA drive. I would've thought there was a problem with the drive, but then that doesn't explain how I saw the first screen.

I even used a USB drive to upgrade my BIOS to the latest version. Still no sign of the drive.

Any ideas?

Are you sure it's a 6.0 Gb drive?
The controller has to be set to ACH mode and not IDE ( which I believe IDE is default on intial boot) in Bios.
You want to turn on ACH before you install the OS otherwise it gets harder to change later....

If that doesn't work try upgrading the Marvel controller.

One other possible is to make sure you have your drive plugged into the correct SATA port on your MB.

Well, I'm just going by the drive specs from the Newegg link (above). The actual drive came bubble-wrapped in an unmarked box.

Will investigate everything else you said. It is set to IDE now for sure. That much I know.

I tried connecting the HD to a 3Gbs SATA port on the MoBo and it gets recognized. I wonder if I can install the OS on this now, and then try moving to 6Gbs after upgrading the Marvell drivers.

Yes, it did show up there.
But I went ahead and used the 3Gbps connection to install the OS.
Now the question is if I can update the Marvell drivers and then change the connection to 6Gbps. Will that be a problem?

I assume you have the SATA3 {Controller} HDD in the correct WHITE SATA3 Port {use the one closest to the MOBO}, next Clear CMOS {refer to the manual}, and next restart. Verify that you D/L and installed the Marvell 9128 Controller Driver.

Also, your HDD will run just as well on the SATA2 Controller; your HDD is ~ 1/2 the SATA2 speed, and I am ALWAYS confused why people buy SATA3 HDDs with primary SATA2 Controllers?! IF you purchased a Crucial C300 SSD {128GB+} then I can see the use of SATA3, but NOT with a HDD.

SATA 6.0Gb/s = SATA3 Controller
SATA 3.0Gb/s = SATA2 Controller

WD1002FAEX HDD Speed ~ 140-160 MB/s ; SATA2 = 300 MB/s per device limit

Images { http://i.imgur.com/vtQHk.jpg } SATA2 ONLY
Images { http://i.imgur.com/Zt2MZ.jpg } WD1002FAEX -> Huh - it's recognized!
Images { http://i.imgur.com/bBypb.jpg } N/A

Have you FORMATTED YET??

Ideal Ports - http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/278015-30-mobo-ideal-sata-ports-settings-ports

"IF" it were "me" move the HDD to SATA2_0 ; Format ; Install the OS ; move to {GSATA3_6} after up & running!

I have already installed the OS using the SATA2. Will try the move to SATA3.
Thanks.

^ BTW - I wasn't trying to be harsh, people are doped into thinking SATA 6.0Gb/s or SATA 3.0Gb/s has something to do with the Actual Speeds of their HDD. If it were the case then it would be a HAL 9000 holographic device.

Just make certain that you have the driver(s) for Marvell installed before moving. You gain little to nothing moving the HDD.

You can always bench 2-3 times {averages} with SATA2 & SATA3 Ports - http://www.attotech.com/products/product.php?sku=Disk_Benchmark

Good Luck! :)

No offense taken. That was exactly what happened. I had not researched much about the actual speeds. But still, good to know.

Allot of companies are doing the plain old bubble wrap without the fancy packaging thing.
If it was an OEM that's all you'll get. I also read somewhere that some of the first gen SATA 3 drives required a firmware update. Mine didn't.
I have 2 of the 1 TB blk 6.0 GB drives as storage only & have the OS on an SSD ( non Intel) on the Intel controller.
The update after install will show the 6.0GB. You should be ok, as long as the drive shows up.
