How to run sfc command windows xp

Hello,
sfc says it is not recognized

You mean XP cannot find the command?
What version of XP?
Is this a company or personal PC?

I would type into the run box:
Open Start Menu, choose:
All Programs / RUN --if you don't see a run box, right-click the start menu, choose properties, click the customize button (off start menu tab)....click the advanced tab, then CHECK the check-box way down in the list that says "Run Command"
....
Then choose "Run" off the "All Programs" (off start menu)....then just type in the:
SFC /scannow {or whatever option you want--I would do a scannow to check all protected system files immediately.}

Just to add to electronian's excellent advice, you should have your XP CD handy in case the system file checker needs to reconstitute some files. Are you running XP Home without Service Pack 3?
