I have waited to try a Canon 20 D out and after a month it seems like some
if any bugs are working out. Now I see where there is some issues with the
new Hand grip, and the cure is putting a piece of cardboard between the grip
and the camera, that sounds screwed up, now the new 580 flash is coming out
, and now there is bugs known by Canon is showing up. What's the deal , a
$1500, camera, $500 flash, and a hand grip , cost is high, won't fit the
damn camera, hell I have seen toys work better than this.
My kids Happy Meal toys fit together better than this.

I am planning on getting a 20D. A friend of mine who is an engineer for
Canon, told me to give at least a year or so before buying any new model of
anything of this sort from any of these manufactures. They always come with
some revisions after about 6 months.
As for support, these are usually supported for about 10 years after the
last ones are produced.

Yes.
And when I got my DSL line installed, I had to explain to the
"installer" how to do it.
What, exactly, does your engineer friend do at Canon?

Tony,
Being cautious about buying a new product (cameras, software, etc) is
usually not a bad idea. You can avoid a lot of aggravation with startup
problems, find out the product's technical flaws from newsgroups like this,
and get the product cheaper.

Your friend would be in deep dodo if his managers knew he was spouting such
"information." Secondly, a year almost ends some life cycles of products of
this type. Of course, buying at the end of a cycle often saves a
significant amount.
I bought a 300D as soon as they were in stock. No problems with the early
production models that I know of. Of course, the 20D could be a different
animal in this regard.

This type of post always attracts lots of attenion.
I have a D60 myself. It has a well-know issue or two, but still it is a
very usable camera. It is not the most recent technology - probably a
generation or two behind the 20D. But I have still not upgraded from it and
every month I get better at using its capabilities. And, when I take a good
picture, it amazes me with what I have done with the camera's help.
Also you have to look at it this way - one can wait as long as they want
before investing in a new technology. Yes, more bugs will be worked out.
Yes, the product will get better.
And.....
Yes, time flies by and you lose opportunity, which is not an insignificant
thing.

I hadn't heard of any. Mine is more consistent, smaller and slightly more
powerful than my 550. Much better useability, too, with better laid out
controls, and of course the little pop-up reflector they copied from
Nikon.

Than what?
I'm always amused by the number of complaining rants by someone who
doesn't own, and has no experience with, whatever they are complaining
about. Either Canon is a favorite target for thse loops, or there are a
small number of very vocal ones out there.

At the end of a year the camera has been replaced in the lineup. Caution
would be waiting for the second run of anything - digital camera, film
camera, television - whatever. Stupidity is waiting until the product is off
the market.

At the end of a year the camera has been replaced in the lineup. Caution
would be waiting for the second run of anything - digital camera, film
camera, television - whatever. Stupidity is waiting until the product is off
the market.

> I am planning on getting a 20D. A friend of mine who is an engineer
for Canon, told me to give at least a year or so before buying any new
model of anything of this sort from any of these manufactures. They
always come with some revisions after about 6 months.
Your friend is correct. And they don't publicize the changes, unless
they're firmware revisions that can be field upgraded. Some issues are
discussed widely on Usenet, but the general public is unaware of them.
Just look at the Canon G2. It was wildly popular, but they had an issue
with the plastic body cracking. Canon would fix it free, but it wasn’t
widely publicized. The later production didn't have this problem at all.

They can’t find all the bugs prior to production. What’s ironic is that
the people that pay the most for products are the ones that buy them
when they first come out, and they get the poorest quality units.
OTOH, waiting a year for a 20D may be a little extreme, by the time
you’re ready to buy it, it’ll be discontinued in favor of the 50D, and
you’ll be starting all over again. I think that 5-6 months is
sufficient, since they should have the major bugs out by then.
I haven’t decided whether or not to get the 20D or wait for the 50D. The
specs on the 50D are very appealing (Canon has skipped the 30D
designation because it is too close to the D30, and they’ve skipped the
40D designation for the same reason they skipped from G3 to G5). I don’t
really care so much about the higher resolution, as 8 megapixels is
sufficient, but the smaller crop factor is very appealing. But this will
mean waiting until 2006 to get one, which is too long.
If I were your friend, I'd be sure that my identity were kept secret.

The 10D has been around for a while, what changes took place or flaws
were corrected?
