Until the "Our apologies..." message comes on, my desktop HP Windows XP seems just fine. Then it shuts down completely. By pushing the "Enter" button repeatedly, I can get the Windows XP window to come on. But it doesn't stay on and then shuts the machine down.

Why? This is a first.

Has it done this after restarts as well? You could also try hitting F8 a few times after the computer starts which will take you to start up options. From there you can click on "Last Known Good Configuration" and see if that works.
