Going to make a new build, and decided to look at the last Tom's builds, they mentioned skyrocketing HDD prices due to Thai flooding, so I hopped on Newegg, and the prices have indeed seemed higher than they used to be, but I don't keep a close tab on HDD prices.

So, how have the HDD prices dropped?

Somewhat, but not a lot. They're still much higher than below the flood, when a terabyte was in the $60s. Right now one'll cost you around $120. The peak was somewhere around $160.

Really the only storage prices I have seen dropping are SSDs. Mechanical hard drives are still at least double their preflooding low prices. A good 120GB SSD can be had for ~$110-$120 on sale though. From what I have read HDD prices will still be inflated through the end of the year due to a shortage of drives.

Right on the SSDs. If you don't have a bunch of media, you can probably survive on 128gb until prices drop some more.

Not the fastest SSD but light years faster than any mechanical hard drive.

Tom's SSDs chart. The whole article is worth reading if you are considering an SSD.

Probably the best SSD on the market right now, the Samsung 830. $179 for the 128GB model.

Ouch, good thing I bought a 500GB drive as extra storage drive.

Will probably use that.

Oh, in that case you're fine. You'd better have a backup, though.

I am seeing some sales now and then on hard drives. Not as low as pre flood prices, but there for a while last fall the were hardly ever on sale
