Well i was checking out the specs of the i5 750 and the i7 920 and i dont see that much of a difference between them. I mean i was looking at the specs on wikipedia (im not sure if the information there is to be trusted), but i dont know if its worth spending 100 bucks more on a i7 when the i5 is almost the same. If im wrong or theres information i dont know, fell free to add anything so i can understand better, thanks!

i7 920 vs i5 750
socket 1366 vs 1156
triple channel DDR3 vs dual channel DDR3
2.9 max turbo boost vs 3.2GHz max turbo boost
130w TDP vs 95w TDP
hyper threading vs no hyper threading

i7 930s are out for the same price as the i7 920, the 930 is at 2.8GHz stock clock vs the 920 which is at 2.66GHz

For general use/gaming, the i5 works fine. If you're willing to pay more or if you encode, hyper threading and DDR3 will make it faster.

Agreed with FALC0N, but the i5 750 has an LGA 1156 socket to where an i7 920 has an 1366 socket so they support 2 different chipsets. The i7 920 supports X58 motherboards where as the i5 750 supports P55 chipsets. Although there is an i7 860 that is fairly close to the 920 and it supports the P55 chipset motherboard. A P55 chipset motherboard is cheaper than an X58 but the X58's will give more performance with an i7 920. If you have the money than go for an i7 920. If not then try an i7 860 with a P55 motherboard. If you still can't afford then go for the i5 750 on a P55 motherboard.
