Would be overclocking both, any comparable losses between motherboards ? Would like to be able to run 2 5850s in the future
amd phenom x4 965 & gigabyte GA-MA790XTA-UD4 for $185 or AMD Phenom II X6 1055T & MSI 890GXM-G65 for $225

If you're doing any form of encoding then the X6 would give you the edge over the X4, particularly if you're overclocking. It would also blitz any game you could throw at it provided it was backed up with a strong GPU and RAM.

thanks if i were to just use for gaming though im assuming the x4 is superior ?
Would there really be a notable difference in gaming between these 2, if one were to have the same exact rest of parts.

The only reason the x4 is better in games is because of the 600Mhz advantage. Just bump the multiplier on the 1055t to 17x (no need for voltage increase) and it'll trounce the 965.

edit: oh wait i was thinkin about the 1090t, which has an unlocked multiplier. In that case its still not hard, just increase the bus speed till you get to around 3.4ghz, which still wouldn't require increasing the voltage.

+1 to what yannifb said.

The clock speed would be the only reason gaming performance would differ. However, if you're encoding as you mentioned then you would benefit much more from multiple cores, particularly since you're overclocking anyway.

Take a look at these benchmark comparisons between the two:

The X6 beats the X4 in the vast majority of encoding applications. This performance difference would also be increased again when you overclock the X6.
