someone told me that its better to get an nvidia card if you have an nvidia chipset on your mobo; same with ati.
is this true? am i losing some performance by using an nvidia card on an ATI chipset, or vice versa?

No, it usually does not cause issue. Sometimes there are compatibility issues with the older ones (but that has more to do with them being terrible chipsets). I have used a 4850 (ATI) on an nForce 4 SLI (NVidia) board with no issue.

You can use one or more ati cards on a nvidia chipset, but you cannot enable crossfire.
